It is possible to limit the number of characters in an open-text question to capture the most essential information or to guide towards concise and succinct feedback.
If the text is not limited, respondents will be free to leave long texts. We have conducted practical tests where over 10,000 words or 68,000 characters could be used in an open-text question without any issues, which is well beyond the normal usage needs in surveys.
For very long texts, the output format, such as Excel or Powerpoint, may instead impose limits depending on how the texts are used.
